Supreme Court Halts Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane's Directive to Deploy Traffic Rule Violators as Volunteers

Kathmandu: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order to halt the immediate implementation of a directive that would deploy individuals charged with violating traffic rules as traffic volunteers. This directive was issued by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.
The interim order was issued by a single bench of Judge Til Prasad Shrestha on Sunday. The order comes in response to a writ petition filed by Krishna BK, Akash Bhatt, and seven others, challenging the legality of the Home Minister's directive.
Home Minister Lamichhane had instructed traffic police agencies on May 28 to mobilize traffic rule violators as volunteers on the roads. Additionally, he directed that female traffic officers be exempted from duty during their menstrual periods.
The Supreme Court's decision to issue the interim order reflects concerns over the legality and practicality of deploying traffic rule violators in such roles. The court's order temporarily suspends the directive while the legal challenge is reviewed.
